Chicken, bacon, cheese and barbeque sauce; four very yummy things combined, what’s not to like? Plus, these are the only ingredients needed to recreate a true pub classic, Hunter’s Chicken.

For a student, we know how much easier it is to simply buy a ready – made version of our favourite meal. Yet, in some cases, buying the ingredients and making it yourself can save you money and is often a healthier option. Saving money?! Ahh now you’re intrigued. So, scrap the 2 for £5.00 ready meals. You’ve got this!

Hunters Chicken is hearty, flavoursome and just feels like one big hug after a long day at uni, and to make things even better it will only take you 30 minutes to make.

Hunter’s Chicken for one


1 Chicken Breast

A handful of grated cheddar cheese

Sticky barbecue sauce

1 rasher of bacon

  1. Wrap the chicken breast in bacon ensuring the bacon does not overlap. Put in the oven for 25 minutes at 180°C,356°F.
  2. Take the chicken out of the oven and make a small cut into it to check it’s cooked.
  3. Squirt sticky barbecue sauce over the top of the breast and use a knife to spread the sauce over the chicken.
  4. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top and cook in the oven for a further 5 minutes.  Keep a close eye on the chicken as you really don’t want to end up with it dry!

And that’s it! No really, don’t go turning the page to find the rest of recipe because it does only involve these four simple steps. There’s nothing complicated about this dish, so whether you enjoy cooking a lot or you have little experience, this is a dish perfect for everyone.  

I like to serve mine with creamy homemade mash, but chips or wedges are also good. Add whatever veg you like, I personally like green beans and peas but asparagus and carrots are also a great combination.
