After a slow start to the season, ULWFC are back to winning ways.

The season kicked off with the 1’s at home to Nottingham 2’s, after 30 minutes they went 2-0 down, ULWFC still showed a strong desire and passion to bring the game back, strikers Milly Cutler and Lily Cocking scored a goal in each making the score line 2-2 at half time. Unfortunately, in the second half the ULWFC players started to tire, resulting in a 5-2 defeat. However, a particular well done to Lily Cocking who managed to bag herself a goal on her debut as a new member to the club for this upcoming season. Wednesday 17th marked the beginning of the 2’s season who were at home to DMU, a close exciting game finished 3-2 to DMU, great goals from Tamara Dkaidek and a good performance from the girls who had never played together before.

The 17th was a very exciting game of football all round resulting in triumph for our 1’s over Loughborough! ULWFC came into this game with a desire and hunger to compete and state our claim in the league against a side that we managed to beat twice last season. Loughborough provided us with a perfect playing service that left us no excuse but to play creative football. This week we had to call upon the versatility of Marie, our usual centre back, to take up the position of goalkeeper and help secure our defensive line. We went into the game very competitive as did Loughborough causing it to be very high tempo with relentless waves of attack from both teams. This high tempo proved it difficult for much combination play to occur and enticed last ditch tackles. After going 2-0 down the girls had to find another gear in order to get back into the game. Through a team effort it came down to our captain Milly to be clinical in front of goal, giving us all 4 goals including a last minute set piece which gave us the much deserved win and Milly man of the match. This game set the bar for the tempo, fitness and desire required to compete in the league this year.

The following week we travelled to Birmingham City for the first round of the cup. Even on a rough pitch, ULWFC keep a clean sheet, a contribution to this being Marie Copping who pulls out a fantastic penalty save. Goals from Milly Cutler with three, Natalie Mutamba gets one, and Caitlin Kemp grabs hers with a spectacular run down the middle bringing it wide for a left footed finish into the back of the net.

Now for the last games of the month, the first team play Coventry away and the seconds play Harper Adams away. Despite Milly scoring two goals, the firsts unfortunately lose the game 4-2. Switching over to the second team, they had all the reason to celebrate with a 5-0 win. Tamara Dkaidek and new addition to second team squad Rihanna Hutchinson, score two goals each, Katie Reed grabs one for herself too.

Second team captain Abi Bowran reflects on the seconds team performance this month. ‘I’m really proud of how the girls have performed this season. Everyone has given 110%, there is great chemistry within the team considering the season has just started. Bring on the rest of the season.’

First team captain Milly Cutler expresses her thoughts on the first team’s performance this month. ‘The hard work we have been putting into training has translated well onto the pitch. Our first game gave us the opportunity to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses despite the result. The Loughborough game was an excellent response, nobody gave up. Our confident performance in our recent cup win highlights the creativity and strength the team possess. I’m excited to see how far this team can go this season.’
